About Slow Food
Slow Food is a movement founded in Italy in the 1980’s, that has grown into a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world. It is dedicated to promoting a slower way of living and eating that links pleasure of food with commitment to the community and environment.
The Santa Barbara chapter of Slow Food has been active for 20 years, seeking to spread the word that all people can eat food that is good for them, good for the people that grow and prepare it, and good for the planet.
Our members enjoy dining out, and they want to support local establishments whose philosophy espouses the same principles.
Saturday, September 25, 2010, has been declared Slow Food National Community Volunteer Day – A Slow Food Day of Action. In support of that goal, Slow Food Santa Barbara has chosen as their project to assist Harding University Partnership School in acquiring a badly needed walk-in refrigerator. In 2007, Harding developed a program that provides healthy meals made from scratch using fresh and organic produce. They have created a healthy learning environment along with increasing physical, nutritional and environmental education. The school serves breakfast, lunch, and snacks to its students on a daily basis. Harding also hosts the Wednesday Farmers Market on its campus. Having a walk-in refrigerator would greatly assist them in taking their project to the next level.
To raise funds for this project, Slow Food Santa Barbara is asking local restaurants and food purveyors to designate a dish or product as their “Slow Food Special” on that day, and to donate the revenue thereof to Harding School. Slow Food Santa Barbara will sponsor a media campaign to publicize this project, along with the support of Slow Food members and the Harding School family of faculty, staff, students and parents. The goal is to create extra business at businesses that agree to participate in supporting this project.
On behalf of Slow Food Santa Barbara and of the Harding community, I want to express my sincere thanks for your generous participation.
Best regards,
Laurence Hauben, Slow food Santa Barbara Chapter President
