People and places we love

Support Our Work

On this page, you will find links to our favorite restaurants, food shops, places to stay, and food and wine-related events that are in keeping with Slow Food principles. This list is in progress. It may never be complete, in fact I hope that it will continue to grow just as Santa Barbara's dining scene continues to evolve and grow. We have more restaurants per capita than any other town in the nation. Many of them are good. A few are even excellent. We also have great places to stay and things to do while you visit.
Click on the name to be taken to the establishment's website, or give them a call if they are not on the web.

Dine

Sojourner Cafe

The Sojourner Cafe is famous for its homestyle flavor combined with a creative international flair. Beginning in 1978 as the original "coffeehouse" in Santa Barbara, the Soj has evolved into a landmark natural foods eatery supporting local organic farmers.
With a friendly and casual feeling, the Sojourner warmly welcomes you for lunch, dinner, or late night.
Locals like it so much, many eat there several times a week, and quite a few are found at the Soj everyday.
Prices are affordable, and the menu combines classic healthy fare with Slow Food member chef Edie Robertson's creative specials.

Bouchon Santa Barbara

"An always-intriguing seasonal menu derived from Santa Barbara County's Wine Country and fresh ingredients, this intimate restaurant lies hidden behind a shrubbery portal in the heart of downtown.  The food and service are impeccable, and an experienced staff stands ready to help coordinate by-the-glass wines for each course." Frommer's, 2005 Best Restaurants in California. We couldn't say it better ourselves, except that they don't tell you about owner Mitchell Sjerven, whose great sense of hospitality stands behind it all. Also, there are over 50 wines by the glass, all local.

Olio & Limone

Chef/owner Alberto Morello is from Sicily. The food is delicious, the wine list extensive, and Alberto's wife Elaine
oversees the tasteful dining room.

Downey's

26 years of perfection, and another husband-wife team.

Wine Cask

Gorgeous dining room, world-class wine list, chef Jeremy Tummel, a local, is getting great reviews. Under new ownership as of June 1 2007.

Ballard Inn

I just love this place. Owner/chef Budi Kazali has an amazing palate, and the Pacific Rim influence in his cuisine is beautifully refined simplicity.
Truly not-to-be-missed, and you can stay at the romantic inn.
